Review: Home Sweet Home PS4 PSVR

The first big scare in Home Sweet Home also sets the stage for its first big frustration. Before you even realize what’s happening, the game expects you to spin around, run into another room, realize you can hide in lockers, then hide in said locker, all within seconds. If you don’t do it it right, you die immediately, then have to reload and watch the setup again.

It should also be noted that though it is being promoted and sold as a PS VR game, Home Sweet Home can be played perfectly well outside of VR. And the first antagonist that player encounters in that frustrating opening is a classic horror villain for the ages, right up there with terrifying film villains like Sadaku from Ringu and Kayaku from Ju-On. This is a creation that is horrifying in its relentless pursuit of Tim, and its lamenting moans are utterly bone chilling.

The sounds, ambiance, creature designs, and the mystery in which Tim finds himself were certainly well crafted. What’s more are the collectibles you can pick up on your journey. Most will be incredibly easy to find, but that may have been the point.

But the things that the game does well will live on in my memory long after the missteps that threatened to ruin the scary fun. Allows itself a little more leeway when it could have just as easily restricted itself to its toy store starting point. Begos maintains consistency with the movie’s heightened aesthetic despite the larger sandbox that he allows himself to play in. These are characters that never stop drinking or getting high despite being in constant peril. So much of the film is just Tori and Sam casually chatting as they mock Christmas tropes and rank metal albums and horror sequels.

Home Sweet Home Review

"Home Sweet Home is one of the most intense PlayStation VR compatible horror games released to date, and it’s ready to take you on an experience you’ll never forget." The truth is that there exists a market for a game of this type, especially on Wii, a system that sails the so-called blue ocean. If your idea of a quality WiiWare game is World of Goo or LostWinds, well, stop reading now -- Home Sweet Home is absolutely not for you in any way, shape or redesigned form, period. But as someone who has spent the last 10 months entrenched in the ups and downs of the real estate market, first selling and then buying a new home, I can appreciate a game about decorating. I have sunk just as much time into the presentation of my new house's living room, kitchen and bedrooms as my wife has, much to her chagrin. And the deep-dwelling nerd within me has even pondered the possibilities of creating a virtual apartment on PlayStation 3's Home network, whenever it finally goes live.

While Home Sweet Home doesn't bring anything new to the table for first person horror puzzlers, it does stand out with the inclusion of Thai horror folklore which is truly terrifying. It's let down with a couple of bugs but it's not a bad way to spend a few hours. Even though there is much good to be said about the game, I would also like to note that it is not for the faint of heart. Some examples may be that you need to blow out three candles scattered throughout the complex to allow access through a certain door, but each of those candles has its own puzzle.

Even without X-Enhancements, this offers some of the best visuals I’ve seen in a horror survival for a long time. The shadows which cast over the blood soaked walls projected from the bright florescent lights, add an element of terror that really works against a modern setting, which in my view creates a far more scarier atmosphere. After a long night filled with mourning and sorrow over the recent disappearance of his wife, protagonist Tim awakens to find himself in a strange, dilapidated building instead of the comfort of his own home. Naturally confused, he desperately begins to search for a way out while attempting to solve questions that could lead to answers regarding his wife’s disappearance.

The act of being engaged in the action prevents me from entering the trance-like state that allows for true frights. I have often enjoyed scary games because I enjoy horror fiction and imagery, but I haven’t often found games to be actually frightening. Long before the advent of VR gaming, there were not many games that scared me. Sure, the dogs that crash through the windows in Resident Evil made me jump, and I was somewhat unsettled the first time that I witnessed Pyramid Head abusing his mannequin friends in Silent Hill 2. But as a medium, the interactivity of gaming has always served to create an invisible wall between the screen and my emotions. Is that it’s never too worried about plotting or suspension of disbelief.

The movie features mock commercials during its introduction to create the sensation of channel surfing during the middle of the night when you just happen to stumble upon this delirious midnight madness. Begos shot the movie on 16mm where the film grain and bleeding colors only enhance the experience. Steve Moore’s score is equally effective and punctuates every grisly set piece.

Then this is where the second issue comes in from the VR side, with the staggered turning in the games VR mode it makes turning slower than it should be, which is an issue when you need to turn and run from an enemy. Again, as with the visual aspect making it much more enjoyable in TV mode. Tim must sneak and hide to survive, as lingering for even a moment in the gaze of a spirit will lead to a swift and jarring death. It is this is dynamic that allows Home Sweet Home to turn the screws of suspense, taking players’ breath away with heart-stopping sequences and wicked jump-scares.

Thankfully, Home Sweet Home has no problem with this, as the sound in the game is likely its best facet. Home Sweet Home is a first-person horror adventure game based on Thai myths and beliefs. After his wife’s disappearance, Tim awakens to find himself in a strange, dilapidated building instead of the comfort of his home.

But, once you find them it will soon be clear on what you have to do, and I think this is not a bad thing. This means you wont be stuck around in the puzzle sections for too long. The only real misstep in the sound department is the voice acting for Tim and Jane, but it is blessedly brief and none too frequent. Frankly, it is a welcome relief from the tension of Home Sweet Home to giggle at the stilted line readings. As he explores his surroundings, Tim quickly realizes that he has left the world of logic and reason behind, as he soon finds himself pursued through a nightmare landscape by vengeful spirits.

Home Sweet Home also caters for the VR enthusiasts, though unfortunately, we Xbox fans have yet to dive into the world of VR. That said, the game will allow other console and PC users to enjoy the game in other ways and I can only imagine how horrific this game will be in Virtual Reality. Early Access and App Lab reviews do not count towards the VRGC score and also not towards headset scores. Become a home entertainment expert with our handpicked tips, reviews and deals.

Playing Home Sweet Home in its normal mode is definitely the way to go. Since I was aware of its upcoming release on the PlayStation 4, I’ve been intrigued by Home Sweet Home. I consider myself a fan of “Asian horror,” with plenty of films and comics under my belt, most of them hailing from Japan and Korea. So my interest was immediately piqued when I learned of this game, which draws its horror from the mythology of Thailand.
